The 3rd Kyushu University CESS Symposium

On Thursday, March 10, 2016, a “Symposium by the Center for Co-evolutional Social Systems” will be held at the Co-Evolutional Social Systems Innovation Facility (Kyushu University Ito Campus).

This will be the third symposium proceeding the one held last January at ACROS Fukuoka (Fukuoka). This event was successful, with approx.100 in attendance.
We are truly grateful to all those who came and took part in this event.

The theme of this symposium was “Creating a Human-Centered City and ICT Integration.”

The event was composed of two parts: a lecture and a panel discussion. We shared our vision of a new city and the role that information and communications technology (ICT) plays in various cities around the world.

First, opening comments were given by Masato Wakayama (Executive Vice President/Senior Vice President), followed by comments from the guest of honor Mr. Takenori Kitamura (Deputy Director, University-Industry Collaboration and Regional R&D Division, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), as well as greetings from the guest of honor Mr. Masaharu Sumikawa (COI STREAM Vision 3 Visionary Leader).

Then the Center Leader Korehisa gave the overall project status and the outlook of phase 1 to phase 2 development. Professor Harada of Kyushu University spoke about “Community Cooperation and Maximizing Locally-generated and Locally-used Renewable Energy for the Purpose of a Disaster Prevention Base Plan,” and Professor Matsuhashi from Tokyo University spoke on a “Model to Calculate the Various Social Implementation Effects of ‘urban OS’”.

Next, Keynote Speech 1 related to experiences at the launch of a smart community project overseas, and Keynote Speech 2 touched on urban issues in Fukuoka city.

In the panel discussion, Mr. Kazuaki Murakami (Vice-Director, Institute of Systems, Information Technologies and Nanotechnologies (ISIT)) addressed the subject, “Does Urban OS Dream of Electric Sheep?” and Mr. Shuhei Ishimaru (Director General, Fukuoka D.C.) gave a lecture on the “Role of the Fukuoka Directive Council.” Later, several panelists successful in various fields led a discussion based on chosen themes.

Also, outside the venue (1st & 2nd floor of the facility), we displayed activity posters and demo equipment from each Kyushu University COI Unit, and received many questions and feedback from participants.

After the symposium, we held a skull session at the Refresh Library on the 3rd floor.

The atmosphere was casual, with drinks and food, and people of various backgrounds exchanged detailed opinions on “Creating a Human-Centered City and ICT Integration.”

Through this symposium, we gained awareness of social implementation expectations, and we hope to establish an even closer industry-university-government cooperation and further progress on our projects.
