Project overview

The Center of Coevolutionary Research for Sustainable Communities consists of Operation Management Unit in charge of operation and management of the center, Energy Group, Mobility Group ICT Group and Math for Industry Group. Each group has a Group Leader who is in charge of operation and research of the group.The center has the R&D Meeting of the Center consisting of Project Leader, Research Leader and Group Leaders so we can discuss matters and fine tune ourselves for questions like, “is this counting towards an exit strategy?” or “are we conscious about the need to create a new market by adopting market needs and listening to cross-industrial views?” and more. Also have external advisors - who have experience in creating global innovations and have commercialized many of them, to give us ideas on center operations and study research.

Group overview

Energy Group

In order to tackle worldwide issues that result from global warming, the industry, academia and government collaborate 
together to conduct studies on hydrogen technologies and energy systems for the future society to realize a paradigm shift of 
technology industry and society. With an aim to propose an ideal future energy service concept, along with cooperation from 
other groups, we plan to introduce an advanced technology and a social system that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) by 80% 
in 2050. Specifically Kyushu University handles the creation of innovative technologies such as hydrogen infrastructure, a high-
efficient power generation system, and zero emission mobility, as well as methods for their social implementation. 
The University of Tokyo Satellite conducts energy/ICT related technology innovations along with reforms in economic and social 
institutions, and they have been advancing toward energy conservation and low carbonization to benefit the consumer sector.

Mobility Group

From the standpoint of SDGs, the aim is to "achieve mobility that is sustainable, safe, secure and easily available for those who 
are mobility disadvantaged, and to make them feel included" in the society. We are carrying out a research and development 
for an easily accessible "Smart & Multi-modal Mobility System" that is cost-effective and minimizes environmental burdens. 
The goal is to maintain the liveliness of an environmentally focused society that faces a decreasing and aging population. 
The comprehensive approach is taken, including supporting people to select the smart transportation by sharing information, 
providing transportation alternatives to private cars, and maintaining road infrastructure safety which plays a vital role in 
transportation.

ICT Group

With an aim to build a social environment that maintains a lively society and allows for various types of people to live in security, 
we offer monitoring services to ensure the safety and security of our citizens and the elderly, as well as carrying out research 
and development for creating a vibrant society by utilizing the people flow sensors and new devices.
In addition to this, to improve the performance of these individual services developed at this Center, we also put our efforts into
promoting the coevolution of Energy/Mobility/Mathematics for Industry. Moreover, we assist the advancement of an information 
infrastructure that supports data circulation, anomaly detection utilizing machine learning, analysis of image data through deep
learning, and research for devices that can be utilized in various services.

Math for Industry group

In association with the technological progress of the measurement and telecommunication, promptly analyzing the vast amount 
of data and using it to make highly accurate estimations has become a vital step in realizing a sustainable and vibrant society.
Mathematics for Industry develops data utilization technologies utilizing the know-how of modern mathematics to support 
research and development/social implementation of energy, mobility and ICT.
We are conducting researches such as estimations of the energy demand and support for electric power procurement planning 
using statistics that handle big data combined with machine learning, support for livable community based on analysis of large 
scale survey and a high dimensional mapping visualization technology using topology.

Operation Management Unit

The unit plays a role to support the research strategy and planning, looking at the future realization in the society. Also it functions 
as a window to the Visionary team of COI.
The leader of the unit is performed by the Project Leader to keep the consistent management to the project.
The unit consists of four groups below.

・Planning of interactive workshops, investigation of new seeds/needs
  and new R&D issues 

Business Promotion Group
・Planning of development and creation of roadmaps targeting business 
  and realization in the society.
・Publication Strategy and information delivery of the research results .
・Window to the internal and external organizations.
・Support for the global deployment.

Intellectual Property Group
・IPR strategy.
・Support for IPR creation, maintenance and utilization .

Admin Group
・Budget creation and management.
・Administrative support on HR, Finance and general affairs.
